How to choose the right boiler

The right boiler will save you money on your bills

Choosing the right boiler can make a big difference in your home - the right boiler will save you money on your bills and make sure you have enough hot water. To make the right decision, you need to think about the size of your house, the number of showers and bathrooms in your home and the water pressure. An average boiler lasts 10 to 15 years, so you should also think about any future home improvements or additions you might be planning when considering the size and type of boiler to buy.

Condensing Boilers - 70-80% Energy Efficient - Reduced Carbon Footprint

Condensing Boilers

The right boiler will save you money on your bills

Condensing Boilers take water from a tank or directly from the mains and heat your home and your hot water. All boilers produce waste flue gas as a by-product of heating your home, but a condensing boiler uses a Flue Gas Heat Recovery System to ‘recycles’ the heat from these flue gases. A condensing boiler rapidly reduces the heat of these gases from 130°C to 50°C and then reuses this energy to heat your home and water. During this process it creates condensation, which is removed via a condensing pipe into your wastewater pipe.

Energy efficient

Condensing Boilers are better for the environment and are 90% more energy efficient than older types of boilers. By reusing extra heat that would have escaped into the atmosphere, this type of boiler will reduce your carbon footprint, reducing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

Lower energy bills - Combat climate change

It is now a legal requirement in the UK for every new boiler to be a condensing boiler. So regardless of whether you install a combi boiler, system boiler, or conventional boiler, it must operate using a condensing action. Condensing boilers are more energy efficient and will lower your power bills. Condensing Boilers is between 70-80% energy efficient ; it saves energy by using a larger heat exchanger to reuse extra heat, which would usually escape into the atmosphere.

Combi Boilers - High Efficiency Heating System - Save Space

Combi Boilers

Combi Boilers to suit your needs

Combination boilers are the most common type of boiler fitted in the UK. They are one of the most energy efficient boilers available and can help to reduce your energy bills.

Save money on your energy bills

Because you are not heating a tank of water, you are not wasting energy keeping water warm in the tank ready for when you might need to use it. The absence of a water tank makes these boilers more straight forward and cost effective to fit. It also means you will save money on your energy bills.

Combi boilers does not require a cylinder or water tank, which saves precious space in your loft area. Rather than heating an entire tank of water, it heats water as and when you need it, giving you an unlimited supply of hot water ‘on tap’! The lack of water tank also makes these boilers more straight forward and cost effective to fit.

Combi boilers work best in smaller houses, with fewer bathrooms as it is can only provide hot water for or one task at a time, it may struggle to fulfil the needs of larger households running two showers or baths simultaneously. Combi boilers also struggle in homes with low water pressure.

Conventional Boilers - Ideal For Large Households - Tank Required

Conventional Boilers

Requires a hot water storage tank

A conventional boiler is also called a traditional, regular, open vent or heat only boiler. They are a great option for large households that have plenty of space to store a cylinder and water tank. The advantage of this boiler is that it can supply hot water to different bathrooms and taps at the same time. It also works well if you have low water pressure.

Compatible with a solar heating system

The amount of hot water you can access at once is limited to the size of the cylinder. This means if someone has a large bath, you might have to wait for the water in your tank to warm up before you have hot water again. You will need lots of space to house the various parts of this system, including a tank, cylinder and circulation pump. Because the water is heated in a tank you will lose heat over time, if the water is not used. However, you can use this boiler together with a solar heating system link to solar panels section to reduce your energy bills and increase efficiency.

System Boilers - Steady Supply of Hot Water

System Boilers

Conventional or Traditional Boiler

System Boilers, also called a closed vent boiler, is a good option for a larger house with multiple bathrooms, but less loft space to store a water tank. A system boiler uses a water storage cylinder but does not use a water tank. Many of the external components used in the conventional boiler are housed within the system boiler, such as the circulation pump and expansion valve, saving even more space in your home. These boilers also work well if you live in a low water pressure area.

Compatible with a solar heating system

They are economical to run and can also be used with a solar thermal system to further increase energy efficiency. As with the conventional boiler, you may need to wait for hot water to heat up if you use a large volume at one time.
